Irma day…Sunday. 9/10/17...morning.

Irma will be in Sanibel later today through tonight.

The map of Sanibel and Captiva is behind the headline.  We are on the right or east end; the Chapel by the Sea is upper left corner.  Most of Sanibel runs east to west in the Gulf.  Winds are coming from northeast today so far…from the upper right corner of the map.

Let’s check the cameras.

Here’s the one looking out of our house at 558 Lighthouse Way.  Wind is 16mph at 7:30AM; raining.  The Gulf of Mexico is straight ahead about a half mile and there’s a boat canal behind that house of our neighbors’ – the Mitchells (I hope they’re in Michigan).

Here is the Weather Underground forecast…see how they are calling it for our island… the bottom line is the wind forecast.

Here’s the Sanibel Cam at the island end of the Causeway…we are a mile to the right…it’s still relatively calm, compared with the forecast of 128mph at 4PM today.

I heard from Doc Bruce Neill and he made it to a shelter near the Fort Myers Airport last night…here’s his report.

Thank you for your inspiration my friends, Chip and Nancy, and Nancy Kennedy. I am holed up with several families on a great parcel of land just west of the airport. Was at one time the Ft. Myers Rod and Gun Club –  we are all comfortable and enjoying great companionship. Eleven people, 3 dogs, 2 cats, a snake, and several lizards. Feasted on venison stew. Best shelter ever. Kind of wish I was still on island, but am so glad not to be. Love to you all.”

Smart move, Doc.

More later….keep prayers flowing.  Thanks.

  • Thanks so much for posting these updates, Chipper. So glad to hear Doc Bruce made it to a shelter with his assorted animals! Wanted to call you and let you know that Barb Lewis from Chicago called this morning, worried about you guys. I was able to tell her all about it and forward the blog to her so she can keep up-to-date as well. I’m on pins and needles myself waiting for Irma to make landfall, but I just read your “Peace” post and I love your attitude! “Let go and let God,” I think they say in Al Anon. Love you guys very much and sending prayers and hugs. Christy
