Cortona’s Le Celle…St. Francis slept here.

First…Another correction in spelling from the post about the monks and chanting. The place is important, as we would recommend that you visit there…it is properly Sant’Antimo; not Sant’Damiano as I stated earlier.  It’s a punishment, no doubt, for my earlier bragging about the 1955 spelling bee.

Castelnuovo Dell’Abate is this little hill town above the Abbey. Put it in the GPS to find the Abbey.

On Monday we headed up and outside the walls of Cortona to visit another retreat place for St. Francis – Le Celle.

in the early 1200’s, he created a tiny retreat here. his friends decided to join him and built some rooms. it got bigger in the 1600’s, when the Capuccin monks decided that “back to nature” was the way to go.

he prayed and contemplated in that niche over to the left. all stone.
