On the Danube; traveling to Vienna…Friday 9/26/14

DSC_0151We are very excited to get to the ship, since that’s the whole point, right?  We have really enjoyed Amsterdam, The Hague and Budapest…but here’s the Avalon Waterways, Illumination.  It’s docked about a half mile from our hotel and we board about 4PM and leave about 6, traveling to the north toward Vienna.

Here’s the room.DSC_0160DSC_0159DSC_0158And the bath’s not bad at all.

The whole cabin is only 200 square feet, which sounded very tiny, but that door slides two-thirds open to make it seem large. DSC_0182Marilyn and Nancy embarking.  63F.

For a minute, let’s go back to our Friday morning, because we were able to wander about in Budapest (mostly in Pest) to see the Hungarian Parliament building (Europe’s largest), St. Stephen’s Cathedral and a very moving memorial to the Jewish Hungarians, who were murdered here during WWII.

The Parliament is amazing and right on the Danube…we will see the whole thing later, as we float by on the boat. DSC_0128DSC_0132

St. Stephen’s is awesome.

This memorial on the river-bank is much more chilling than that visit to the Terror Museum yesterday…and, do you see the blue sneakers that someone has just left behind?  Many of the shoes have flowers deposited in them.

A couple of goofy things now….here’s a perfect politician.  Remember, the Hungarians show the last name first, so you have to reversed them to get it right…especially in this guy’s case.  Hate to set this, but he looks like Chris Christie, too.DSC_0113

Some charming everyday things that are more attractive than we see in the USA.

The phone is actually pink in this one.

Now, back to embarkation and leaving port.

DSC_0191Here’s our Intercontinental Hotel…you can see how close it is to the river.

DSC_0172This is a Statue of Liberty on the Buda Hills above us.

Then, in the background beyond the Chain Bridge is the new Four Seasons Hotel in the old Gresham Palace.  This is the world class place to be…perfect location and totally classy and quiet.  Had lunch there today.DSC_0199

The Parliament Building looks much larger from this vantage point, too.  The Shoes Memorial is down along the river bank to the lower right.

We wave a fond good-bye to Budapest from the upper deck.DSC_0221

Tomorrow, Vienna.
