First day – Milan to Lake Orta

San Giulio Island in the distance

We landed in Milan at 9AM after the all night flight from Newark…a bit bleary-eyed, but glad to be here.

It’s about 45 minutes drive to the lake.  The drive is through some industrial areas north of Milan.  It reminded us of the arrival at Maui in Hawaii…we  went by the K-Mart, Lowes and Home Depot before we spotted any beauty at the water’s edge.

The town is Orta San Giulio; the Hotel San Rocco is an old convent, but recently renovated.  So, the rooms are not spacious, but quite modern and I am using my wireless internet connection to transmit this post.   Rain is our gentle friend as we stroll the tiny streets out to the main Piazza for lunch.  We took a two hour nap and had a shower, which is our way of beating jet lag….it seems to be working again for us.

The kids get here tomorrow morning and the sun is supposed to be our companion for a few days here.  Rest and relaxation and a bit of exploring tomorrow and then a boating excursion on Lake Maggiore on Monday.

Arrivederci for now.

Benedictine Nuns live in the biggest building; there’s supposed to be a Basilica there, too….must be behind there.  Perhaps, we’ll see tomorrow.
