I saw that phrase, but didn’t get it. It’s absolutely harrowing and can’t be understood…it has to be driven to be believed. Later.
We get up really early and arrange our packing to accommodate the trip to Iona. Our first Ferry (Oban to Craignure) on the Isle of Mull is fine for the car, but the 2nd Ferry (Fionnphort to Iona) is just for people…no cars on Iona. So, we pack to carry one bag over on the ferry, since we are staying at The Argyll House; one of two hotels on the island. That’s fine; breakfast in the Skye Room is good…well, grand.
We get checked out of Isle of Eriska with promises to be back tomorrow. The drive to Oban is 30 minutes to the ferry Terminal…easy.
The ferry drops us in this cute town of Craignure and we go left for the road to Fionnphort – 37 miles away…the nightmare begins.
“Single track” means for 37 miles, no other lane exists. Except the “lay-by”…by the striped poles.
For some reason, here on Iona, my photo uploading is not working. So, the words will be supplemented by some more words…photos later…like tomorrow.
Well, we are together; driver and navigator. And, she has gotten good at this “Stay to the left” stuff.
Now it’s going to be an hour of “Stay on the road.” “Watch out for that oncoming truck.” or… “Oh, my god, there’s a bus coming!”
Never so glad to see Fionnphort Ferry Terminal after this 37 miles. It’s small, it’s old, but it’s “off the road for a while”. Just what we needed. Iona is very, very tiny. Most people come for the day, take the ferry over, walk to the Abbey and go back on the ferry, which goes every 20 minutes.
Many of these “pilgrims” come in busses. Whoa, Nelly, if you’re meeting them on the road.
The road actually has a number – A849 or something. What a travesty.
Oh, well, so much for the Isle of Mull. It’s scenic, if you can look up. But, no one in our car looked very much.
Let’s talk about Iona…After we have dinner and a drink would be best.
Later. Chip & Nancy
OMG, I know exactly what you’re talking about! Harrowing, yes. Don’t think we ever had to do it for that distance or anywhere near it. Absolutely, have a drink. We can wait for your next installment! Love, Christy
